Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Commissioning Site Supervisor to lead pre-commissioning and commissioning activities on large-scale industrial and process plant projects across South Africa and the broader African region.

This is a leadership role responsible for managing commissioning teams, coordinating multidisciplinary stakeholders, and ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient plant start-up and handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all pre-commissioning and commissioning activities across multiple systems and disciplines
  • Ensure equipment readiness, system completion, and handover in line with project milestones
  • Develop, review, and implement commissioning strategies, procedures, and schedules
  • Oversee commissioning teams, contractors, and vendors on-site
  • Drive compliance with South African regulations, project specifications, and international standards
  • Manage:
    • System walkdowns and punch listing
    • Mechanical completion and turnover processes
    • Functional testing and start-up activities
  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation and corrective actions
  • Provide regular reporting on progress, risks, and performance to project leadership
  • Coordinate closely with construction, engineering, and operations teams

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a zero-harm safety culture aligned with South African HSE regulations
  • Ensure strict adherence to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act requirements
  • Lead site safety initiatives, including:
    • Risk assessments and hazard identification
    • Permit-to-work systems
    • Toolbox talks and safety audits
  • Empower teams to stop unsafe work immediately

Planning & Coordination

  • Lead commissioning planning aligned with overall project schedules and milestones
  • Coordinate mobilization of commissioning personnel, vendors, and specialist contractors
  • Interface with Site Managers, clients, and regulatory authorities
  • Ensure delivery targets for safety, quality, cost, and schedule are achieved

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Automation)
  • Minimum 8–12 years’ experience in industrial or process plant environments
  • At least 5 years in a senior commissioning or leadership role
  • Strong experience in:
    • Pre-commissioning & commissioning execution
    • Large-scale EPC or brownfield/greenfield projects
    • Multidisciplinary systems (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation)
  • Solid knowledge of:
    • Commissioning tools, procedures, and documentation
    • Engineering drawings (P&IDs, single-line diagrams, etc.)
    • HSE systems and risk management

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working on projects within Africa or remote site environments
  • Background in sectors such as:
    • Energy (oil & gas, renewables, power generation)
    • Mining & minerals processing
    • Petrochemical or heavy industry
  • Professional registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or eligibility to register
